Wheelchair Accessible Vacation Home in Mesa, Arizona

When taking vacations there are the options of staying in a hotel, friend/family’s house, or even RV/tent. Another option is to stay at a home that people own but let vacationers stay in. A group of friends and I did that last year on a trip to Colorado and it was fantastic. Advantages of this are having the amenities of home while possibly having the home customized for you. If you require a wheelchair accessible vacation home, then this one in Mesa, Arizona would be a good choice.

Understanding Owners
The owners of this home are an older couple that use it on occasion as a vacation home.  The husband is a wheelchair user and one of their grandchildren is a quadriplegic and property manager. Thus this 3 bedroom 2 bath house has been made wheelchair accessible. Starting with the front entrance which has an accessible path.

Accessible Inside
Inside the spaces are open and the floors are hard and wheelchair friendly. There’s even a game room with an air hockey table for some unbridled competition.

Master Bath
The most accessible space in the house is probably the master bathroom. First a pocket door leads to the bathroom from the bedroom. Immediately to the left is a toilet with grab bars and plenty of space to position a wheelchair.

Roll-In Shower
To the right of the toilet is a corner roll-in shower. Most of two walls are made of glass block to let in a good amount of sunlight. There aren’t any grab bars but there is a hand held shower and accessible controls.

Roll-Under Vanity
On the other side of the control wall is the vanity area. Here there is a dual “L” shaped counter with most of it being roll-under. The counter top looks to be made of granite with colors that match the rest of the bathroom. The mirrors are big and positioned to be easily seen from a wheelchair.

Second Bath
A second bathroom is not fully accessible but does have grab bars and a suction cup one by the toilet.

Accommodations and Conclusion
Because the owners of this house are wheelchair users themselves, they’ve made clear they want to make their home accommodating. If required, they can provide other medical equipment or find it for you. Another benefit the owners offer is a ready made breakfast so you don’t have to worry about cooking in the morning. A few reviews show very satisfied customers commenting on how the owners seemed to want their guests to have a fabulous experience.
