As the saying goes, “What’s old is new again”. Which is a saying that can be applied in multiple ways. Sometimes it means taking an old style and tweaking it with new style. In my opinion there are periods of classical architecture that are simply timeless. But that doesn’t mean we can’t modernize them some to create something new. Such is the case with this wheelchair accessible bathroom by the Klima Design Group of New Jersey. A bathroom that combines modern and classical elements.

Multiple Shades of Gray
Let’s begin with the dual vanity that looks like a modern version of a luxury bathroom from a black and white Hollywood movie. The counter top is set in an alcove and appears to float as it lightly sits on the center storage drawers. On top of the counter are two low profile vessel sinks that are easy to use from a wheelchair. Two large oval shaped mirrors are placed on the wall and viewable from a wheelchair. Covering the back wall are gray shaded tiles in a Renaissance diamond pattern. Wall lights with hanging beads come out of the alcove walls. The alcove walls have crown molding at the top that creates a grander look.

More Gray Area
Across from the vanities is the roll-in shower. The roll-in shower has a hand held shower along with an overhead shower and a built in bench. The diamond patterned tiles continue onto the shower walls with glass making up the other walls. Between the vanities and shower is a rectangular tile pattern inlayed into the diagonal floor tiles. This gives visual spacing and interest between the two areas. Hanging from the ceiling is an elegant chandelier made of swirling shiny metal and hanging crystals.

Conclusion
When mixing design styles the results can sometimes be … mixed. But when done right you can end up with a space that combines the best of both worlds. As is the case with this classically modern and accessible bathroom. To see more of Klima Design Group’s work visit www.KlimaDesignGroup.net.
