Wheelchair Accessible Kitchen by Studio 512

One of the luxuries of building a new house is that the owner gets to customize it anyway they like. Designing it to fit their lifestyle needs and wants. For people with disabilities, working with the architect and interior designer is important when it comes to function. Being able to live independently in one’s home is essential. Nowadays the kitchen has become the heart of the home where today’s family tends to gather and where socializing happens. Making the room look great is one thing, making it functional and accessible is another. Here we have a cozy loft-like wheelchair accessible kitchen by Studio 512 of Austin, Texas.
Low Over High
What you may notice first about this kitchen is the lack of upper cabinets and the long counter top with lower cabinets. This makes everything reachable from a wheelchair along with plenty of work surface space. There are some high shelves but they’re mainly there for decor. Again this is the owner’s choice.

Under and Reachable
Under the sink and in the corner is the roll-under space. The dish washer is strategically placed next to the sink for easy access when doing dishes. Along the backsplash are electrical outlets that are all reachable from a wheelchair. Finally the dining area is also roll-under for eating, working, and socializing.

Conclusion
The light toned wood and paint work well with the counters to create a light and friendly kitchen. The swooping ceiling makes everything feel organic and flowing. With plenty of natural daylight coming in, this is happy kitchen. To see more of Studio 512’s work visit Studio512.net.
