Swing Down Bath Bench Concept

When making a bathtub accessible, shower chairs, bath benches, and transfer benches can be very useful. If the only the person needing the assistive technology is using the bathtub then the equipment can just stay there. However if multiple people are using the bathtub, then the equipment needs to be taken out while sometimes still dripping water. Argentinian industrial designer Maria Eugenia Escalante designed a simple yet very functional solution with her swing down bath bench concept.

Escalante’s design is simple yet multifunctional. The seat is made out of the same plastics as other bath benches and sits nicely across the bathtub. At the wall end it is hinged and attached to two vertical grab bars. When not in use the bench is simply swung up and is now out of the way. The grab bars serve to help a person both transfer and stabilize themselves. Since some may have trouble reaching over to swing the bench up and down, a remote controlled motorized version would be nice also.
