Yesterday I wrote an article about BioMan which is clothing that can monitor bodily vital signs. But the possibilities of other products giving medical feedback is out there. One such possibility was designed by Toronto industrial designer Shayta Roy while she was still in college. Her Smart Rollator has a built-in system that measures and displays vital signs.

What’s A Rollator?
Real quick for those who don’t know, a rollator is one of those walkers with four wheels, hand brakes, and a seat. Most people prefer rollators over standard aluminum walkers because they’re easier to move and stop. Plus the seat gives a place to sit when a break is needed.

We All Roll On
The Smart Rollator starts out as a normal rollator. The difference is a special handle that measures vitals and a display monitor. Similar to the measuring grips on an elliptical machine, the special handle measures oxygen levels and pulse rate. This information is then sent to the display monitor mounted on the rollator and within view of the user. Volume control is available for audible readout.

Conclusion
Roy didn’t stop with just drawing of the Smart Rollator. She also developed and made a working prototype. Impressive because making an idea work can be much more difficult originally thought. Her concept does have useful potential because knowing how one’s body is handling stress can be a lifesaver. To see more of Shayta Roy’s portfolio visit www.shaytaroy.com.
