Whenever I discuss the concept of roll-in showers with people, the question I get asked most is about keeping water in the shower area. There are many ways to keep water from getting outside the shower area. The shower floor can be sloped to the drain, a collapsible rubber strip can be put at the threshold, a weighted shower curtain can be used, or shower doors (if there is enough room). Another good solution is using shower channel drains (trough drains). These work well because their length can catch more water than a standard drain. Usually these are grates with a metallic look which is fine. However there are now shower channels that can blend in or stand out as part of the design.

Two companies that make shower channels with style are KesselDesign and Tece, both from Germany. The ones from KesselDesign tend to stand out as visually while Tece’s blend in. First we’ll look at shower channels from KesselDesign. Above are two examples of drains with a wood burl and dark grain. Both are beautiful and make you want to actually show off your shower drain!

Want something really different, then here’s  a shower channel that lights up. Adding this light element can be part of the overall lighting plan of the bathroom. Which can change the ambiance of the space.

Another element that can be added to the lighted shower channel is “crystal”. Here light shines through clear balls with bits of color.

Next are the shower channels from Tece. As you can see from the examples, their shower channels blend in with the rest of the floor. Invisibility being the goal by matching the surrounding flooring material.
