Last week I featured an electrical outlet adapter concept that made the act of plugging and unplugging easier. This concept called Plugnetic, eliminated the pushing and pulling motions by utilizing magnets. This week I’m featuring another electrical outlet adapter concept that addresses another common problem. Most electrical outlets are located close to the floor and people need to bend down to access them. A problem for people who have trouble bending or for wheelchair users who have to stretch their arms downward. Recent Product Design graduate Kevin O’Toole of Ireland designed Peri Plug to solve this problem. His concept is a height extending electrical outlet adapter.

First note that Peri Plug for is designed for outlets in the U.K. so that’s why the 3-hole pattern will look odd to North Americans. Of course a North American version could easily be made.

Peri Plug is a long strip with plug prongs at the bottom and a outlet at the top.  A loop handle is located just below the outlet top. This I’m sure is used to hold the adapter against the wall when unplugging something. I would not recommend it for stability when plugging something in. Judging from the picture Peri Plug looks to be about 20 inches in length. So for North American outlets, this will raise the outlet to about 3 feet high.

Peri Plug is a concept that has the potential to help many people with an everyday task. Adding another small piece to helping people live independently. To see more of Kevin O’Toole’s portfolio visit this website.
