In many medical cases we always hear how early detection is vital to successful treatment. This can be especially true in children whose bodies in some cases can adapt to change better than when they’re older. However doctors are caught in a catch 22 with cases of amblyopia (“lazy eye”) and strabismus (misaligned eyes). The two conditions can be successfully treated if discovered early. However most symptoms don’t appear until it’s usually too late. The other problem is an overabundance of false referrals because precautious doctors. But this causes unnecessary medical bills. After years of development and clinical trials, accurate early detection is now available. Dr. David Hunter and his company REBIScan have created the Pediatric Vision Scanner (PVS). A portable device that can quickly diagnose early childhood vision problems.

Outdated Procedures
Traditionally amblyopia and strabismus were tested for by doing simple eye chart tests. But the tests required a cooperative child and the results still could not be entirely accurate. Which led Dr. Hunter to find a more reliable way of diagnosis. Working with others he developed and tested different prototypes. With the help of grants the current sleek and portable version was able to be tested by many other doctors.

Laymen Explanation
I’m not going to try and describe all the inner workings of the PVS because the technology is way above my head. However I’ll try to give a basic explanation. While the child is sitting down, the doctor or other trained staff hold the PVS in front of the child’s face about 1 meter away. PVS is then able to scan the eyes and detect how and where the eyes are fixating.

Conclusion
Clinical trials resulted in nearly 100% accuracy rates. Dr. Hunter hopes that PVS will become a standard test for all children. This can result in successful early treatment and money saved from a false diagnosis. Watch the video below to see Dr. Hunter describe and use PVS. For more information on PVS visit www.REBIScan.com.
