Grab bars are a very simple yet essential part of universal design. Their design in most applications is a metal finish and very functional looking. Some people don’t like this look because they feel it looks cold, reminds them of a hospital, or think the grab bars screams, “I have a disability!” Abbie Sladick is a designer out of Florida who heard this quote from one of her clients, “I would rather fall than have my friends think I have a grab bar!” Now this client probably didn’t totally mean that but definitely felt strongly about perception. That lead to Sladick forming Great Grabz, a company that creates designer grab bars. Some of the more unique ones come from the Heritage collection pictured above.

The Heritage grab bars are curved ones made of acrylic and can hold over 250 lbs of force. They come in 12″, 16″, and 24″ lengths. Choosing a color or appearance to fit your decor shouldn’t be much of a problem because the grab bars come in 26 different colors and appearances. I say appearances because “translucent  with multi colored stones” really isn’t a color. The grab bars can look like granite, translucent colors, clear, and even glow in the dark.

Given the shape and size of these grab bars, I think they are best suited for stabilizing oneself when entering a shower or tub. Or when reaching forward to stand up from a seated position. The Heritage grab bars may not be the best for transferring from a wheelchair. Great Grabz does have a whole collection of other grab bars that would be great for transferring and also look stylish.
