Back in the 1990s, the term and concept of ergonomics really began to gather steam. By that point manufacturing methods and technology made designing and making products with body friendly curves possible and affordable. Since then the field has improved greatly with new materials and continued studies of how the body works and reacts. That continued growth is very important in the medical equipment field. An example of that is this new age crutch by German company GANYMED. Their forearm crutches are designed to be low impact on the body and easy to use.

Useful Curves
The most identifiable feature of the GANYMED crutch is the “S” shaped curve near the top. This curve changes the angle of arms and hands when in use and keeps everything in front of the user. Leading to a lessened jolt with each step and a smoother motions. The “S” shape also allows the user to hook the crutch on their body when not in use or even be used as a tool.

A Handle On Things
An open air design is incorporated into the hand grip and forearm grasp to allow airflow to the skin. Replaceable hand grips in different styles can be exchanged in and out. Multiple shapes in either cork or rubber are available.

Tip Choices
At the base of the crutch are replaceable tips available in three degrees of hardness. Here’s how GANYMED describes them:

60 Shore is for lightweights, or for the swimming pool to provide greater safety and to avoid slipping, 70 Shore for middleweights and 80 Shore for tall people and more likely heavier individuals.

Just like the Model T, the GANYMED crutch is only available in black. But if function and comfort are the goals, then who cares about color. For more information on GANYMED visit www.ganymed.eu.
