A lot of the concept designs I feature usually have a new functional or theoretical idea. But sometimes concept designs are about giving a differnt look to a product. The new design can be futuristic, retro, cultural, themed, or more. For this concept electric wheelchair, graphic designer Ruru Zhuang went with futuristic along with a luxury automotive feel.

Old but New
Zhuang who now works in Sydney, Australia, designed this concept 10 years ago while studying Industrial Design in China. Even today her electric wheelchair still looks futuristic and techie. Although at the time her professors worried that it might be too futuristic for people. Personally I like the look think others would also.

Beyond the Looks
Since her presentations pictures are in Chinese I can’t for sure say what all the features are but they appear to be about the same as electric wheelchairs now available. Some of the special features I could tell were a seat that raises up and down, shading canopy above the head, and some sort of computer screen by the joystick.

Vroom!
Now let’s talk about the overall look of the wheelchair. Maybe it’s the logo but first thing I think of is Bentley. The curvy lines and cover over the base remind me of a luxury car. The overhead canopy adds to that enclosed vehicle feel. I’m just expecting to peel out in this electric wheelchair.

Conclusion
While this concept electric wheelchair doesn’t add much as far a technological innovation (as far as I can tell) I love the look of it. Sleek and stylish, if real I’d have it detailed. To see more of Ruru Zuang’s portfolio visit this website.
