Spring is a comin’ despite the lingering snow flakes for some of us. Which means for many it’s time get their gardens going. Awhile back I wrote a couple of articles (here and here) about some ideas and products for wheelchair accessible outdoor gardens. But not everyone, such as apartment dwellers, have the space to have an outdoor garden. Others may not have an accessible route to the outdoors or let’s just say are not good at keeping plants alive. Indoor gardening is an alternative and their are a myriad of ways and products to do this. Although a fair amount of maintenance is still needed in terms of watering and fertilizing. For a nearly maintenance free and potentially accessible way of gardening, there is the Click & Grow. An indoor vegetable and herb garden kit that does all the watering and fertilizing for you.

What’s In The Box?
Click & Grow looks really simple with just a box and holes at the top. In the center is a cylinder cartridge that contains the plant seeds and nutrients. Batteries are housed in another part of the box. The rest of the box serves as a water reservoir.

Just Add Water … And Batteries
Once the batteries are placed and water poured, Click & Grow gets to work. Software in the cartridge tells the box when to add water and fertilizer. After a couple weeks sprouts will appear after that vegetables and herbs. When water is low a green light will blink and when the batteries are low a red light will blink. A green light means things are A-OK.

Cartridge Refills
The cartridges are replaceable and once a vegetable or herb has gone through its life cycle, another one can take its place. Vegetables and herbs available include mini tomatoes, chili peppers, basil, sage, and more.

Get Smart
The original Click & Grow came with just one plant and had to be placed in a high light area. A newer model called the Smart Herb Garden is in the works which can hold three plants and has it’s own light. This new model is pictured at the top of the page and below in black.
