It’s the chore that no one ever likes to do, taking out the trash. The job is smelly, dirty, and potentially messy. Getting the trash bag out of the trash can involves lifting the bag up and out. A task that can be a bit more of a chore for people with limited arm strength or movement. To make this chore easier British product design graduate Charlie Cruickshank designed BhINge. A trash can that hinges open for easy trash bag removal.

Open Trash
BhINge starts out as a standard and simple cylinder shaped trash can. At the top is a textured rubber surface that flares out to help prevent trash bags from falling back in. Hinges then let half the cylinder open up. A locking handle is built into the flared top. A simple pull that doesn’t involve much gripping is all that is needed to open up BhINge. When done everything snaps back shut.

Suggestion and Conclusion
A simple design for a simple chore that can be a big help. One thing I might add would be little wheels at the bottom of the opening half. This would make the opening motion easier without scraping the floor. To see more of BhINge and Charlie Cruickshank’s portfolio, visit this website.
