Weebles wobble but they don’t fall down, and neither does the Balance Stick. A self balancing walking cane designed by Cheng-Tsung Feng & Yu-Ting Cheng of Taiwan. Most canes that people use are great when strolling along, but can be cumbersome and in the way when someone stops and needs to use both of their hands. Such as when stopping at a cash register and needing to pull out their wallet to pay. The person needs to lean the cane up against something, tuck it under their arm, or try to pay one handed! The Balance Stick makes these little every day moments easier.

You may be thinking that a quad cane can stand on its own also. Which is true, and quad canes are necessary for some because of its wide base. However that wide base can also be a problem in uneven areas or stairs with short treads. The Balance Stick offers the nimble single point of traditional canes. Just like a weeble, the reason the Balance Stick stays upright is because of weight focused at the foot of the cane. Giving the cane an extremely low center of gravity.

Looks wise the Balance Stick’s shape is very similar to many canes you can find today. The skin of the prototype though is very futuristic looking. It’s what I’d imagine a cane-droid hybrid would look like. Personally I like the look but it may not be everyone’s style. Of course if the Balance Stick were to ever go into production, the skin style can easily be made into different designs everyone would like.
