Bad Design Style: Case #33

Bad Crosswalk

Well seeing this crosswalk and median combination just makes me cross! (sorry) But really how does a municipality get away with this. A crosswalk is supposed to be an accessible path but the median in the middle is kinda in the way. These pictures are from the blog of Sean Hayford Oleary who writes about city planning issues in Minnesota.

ADA Anyone?
As Oleary points out in his blog, these crosswalks and medians were constructed/modified within the last ten years and thus should be ADA compliant. ADA code calls for a cleared section through a median if there is one for a crosswalk. Not the case here.

Nope, Try Again
And no, angling the crosswalk around the median is NOT a solution. I’m mean are you seriously going to direct people into the path of traffic? The planning department here needs a refresher on proper planning.
